Bad luck bananas

Written by: The Banana Lover

“Bananas on my boat?! Not a chance!”

When it comes to bananas and fishing, well that just doesn’t mix! I bet if you asked any fisherman across the world if you can bring a banana on their boat, they’ll tell you to stay at the dock!  But why bananas?  What’s the deal!?

Believe it or not, there actually is a story behind bananas being bad luck, and it dates back to the 1700s and there are actually a couple of theories.  Way back when bananas were shipped by boat, the fastest boats were used so the bananas wouldn’t spoil.  Due to the speed of the ship, the fishermen on the boat who were trolling would never catch anything.  At that point, it was deemed that bananas were the cause and they were bad luck!  I don’t know about you, but I’m thinking these guys just needed a deeper diving crankbait!

Another theory is that the bananas carried insects, and those insects carried disease.  Many of the sailors on the boats that carried bananas became ill and they were certain that the bananas were the root of the problem.  Fast forward to today, and we are still afraid of the banana.

For those of you who think this is a pile of you know what, well, I had myself an experience with bananas recently.

It was early on a Tuesday morning.  I packed my lunch ( PB & J..naturally ) an apple, couple bars and a banana.  The banana was for the ride to the lake and was not intended to actually be ON my boat.  Well, as it turns out, I forgot about the banana in my lunch bag and it made it on my boat!

After a few hours, I had caught some fish but I was really expecting a lot more!  It’s fall and I should be seriously ripping some lips after all!  I take a minute to collect myself around 11 am.  I Sit down, open my lunch and the damn banana is starring me right in the face like a bad dream!  “AHHHH” I said….I actually did say AH! lol

Being the frugal person that I am, I ate the banana hoping that would eliminate my problem.  NOPE. Not at all!  I ended up only catching about 15 – 18 fish when I should have caught at least 50!  The crazy thing was, I was marking fishing on my humminbirds all over the place but could only get bites here and there!

The nail in the coffin…my good buddy absolutely SLAYED the fish! Big numbers and a giant 34+ lb sack of smallies!  Nice work Simon 😉

Ultimately, who knows if this was the doing of a bad banana nightmare or it was me just sucking at fishing.  But I’ll tell you..it’s a little to coincidental if you ask me!
